Pleasant Surprise

 August 29, 2010

I have been busy with projects around the house and haven't been able to update in the last couple of months.  By the end of the breeding season I ended up with 21 chicks out of 4 hens.  That averages out to a ratio of 5.25 chicks per hen.  The result was better than I had expected and it was a pleasant surprise.  Last year I produced only 6 chicks out of 4 hens which average out to 1.5 chicks per hen.

So what did I do differently this year?
1. The borders were better conditioned prior to the breeding season.
2. Soya bean and broccoli veggie mix was used to condition the borders and it was consistently feed to the birds throughout the breeding season.
3. I had more cock birds to work with.  I only had 2 cock birds last year and one of them was very clumsy which resulted in lots of clear eggs.
4. No vegetables were fed to the chicks until they were over 8 days old.  I lost several chicks last year for no apparent reason and I clearly remembered that they were stuffed with green peas the night before they died.  The dead chicks had red swollen crops.  This past season I had no unexplained chick deaths.  I lost 3 chicks to mites and that was the total number of chicks that didn't make it.
5. A different brand of vitamin was used.

One of the young birds that hatched this past breeding season and is still not finished with the moult.  This is the same bird in the 5th picture below.

I got Bird Improver from a supplier in Canada.  There was a label but just no listing of the ingredients.  I think that is the standard label.

Hi Leng, I cant stop watching the LVY hen! What a whopper! Would like to see more of your young birds in video as it captures so much more of the bird than any photo could... Keep well, Shawn

 HI Shawn,

 Hi Christel,

I used a pigeon product called "Bird Imporver" http://www.pigeonvitality.com/vmchk/Products/Improver-125gr/flypage.tpl.html  after a friend recommended the product to me.  I have no idea what is in Bird Improver as it is not listed on the container.  I also used the Orlux brand Ferti-Vit.  Be careful with using any products as too high a dose will do more harm than good.  I had one hen that didn't sit tight and some fertilized eggs were lost.

Hi Leng, Thanks for the

Hi Leng, Thanks for the answer! The "improver" are organic acids to acidify the intestines to prevent infection. The Fertivit does contain much vit E, so be carefull not to overdose. As you say, more is not always better! Good luck!!! Chistel

 Hi Christel, The

 Hi Christel,

The manufacturer's description doesn't tell us a whole lot.  What is "natural organic acid" and what else is in there?  Even though I don't really know exactly what is in the mix I will certainly use it again because of the good results last breeding season.

Leng

Hi Leng, These organic acids

Hi Leng, These organic acids do lower the level of acidity in the intestines. By this pathogenic organism do replicate themselves way slower, so the birds own immune system can catch up with them. BTW, what camera do you use to take pictures of your birds? Good luck! Christel

Thanks for the information

Thanks for the information Christel.  I use a Nikon D80 paired with the Nikon 35mm f/1.8 lens.   It's a relatively inexpensive lens but works quite well in low light.  The D80 has been replaced by the D90.

Hi Leng, Congratulations on

Hi Leng, Congratulations on your breeding records and the resulting offspring! What kind of vitamin brand did you use? Regards, Christel

Hi Shawn,

Thanks!  She looks good in the picture but her sister, a yellow variegated hen is a better bird overall and is my favourite bird that I bred this past year.  I'll post videos soon.
