Here are a few of my birds from the 2011 breeding season. I started with 4 hens over 3 years ago, lost 1, and I have been working with the same 3 hens and their offsprings ever since.
Hi Leng,
My favourite of your class of 2011 is the last bird. She is the most proportionate. The birds except the tick eyed buff cock seem a little small, but then they may still be very young - seems they've just finished off their first moult? Personally I also prefer a more definate break in and longer neck. Bird number one I would pair to a broad shouldered partner.
Just my 2cents.
Shawn
Best Border by far is NO. 5 Green 3/4 buff Hen
2nd Yellow Green 3/4 hen no.1
3rd ticked buff cock no.4
4th Yellow Green 3/4 cock no.3
5Th Yellow clear cock no.2
I know the birds well the buff cock seems nervous on video.
Hi Leng,
I like number 1 and 3 video, but as you say, are we not all looking for more depth of body and roudness? I like number 3 best, as he has the right position too.If you look at the Myerside video on http://bordercanaries.co.uk/ , the number one bird is indeed a wonderfull bird, but you also could say it lacks legs. And, I am sure these fanciers also don't have 10 of these top birds in their shed.
A good question to CH breeders would be where to go from here with your birds!
Good luck!
Christel
Thanks Christel. I have never seen a bird as round as the 1st place bird at the Merseyside show in the Toronto area shows that I have attended. I would think it is quite difficult to create a bird that round and yet still have long legs given that the heavy feathers would cover up the thighs.
My favourite this year is probably the 3pd yellow hen (first video) but I would like to see longer legs and more width on her. Basically I want to see a rounder bird with more leg. I was told that I need to improve the depth of the body. Over all I would think I need to improve on the roundness of the body with more width at the shoulders. The 3pd yellow cock (3rd video) has good shoulders and looks short but lack in leg and depth from chest to back.
What do you think Christel and other fellow border fanciers? Can I have your assessment of the birds in the videos please.
Christel, can you drop me an email? I have a question for you about brewers yeast relating to your comments a while back on the Phil Warne site. Thanks.
Hi Leng,
Good points first.
Your birds have good leg position, they also have nice feather.
However, they are very small birds compared to those in Europe.
The question is, how big do you want them to be?
As you correctly identify yourself, they lack width and roundness.
You can improve these points, but they come at a cost.
With increased width and roundness, you will find that fertility decreases,
feather problems occur, longer legs can mean incidents of deformed legs,
hip problems in the nest. So there are costs involved in producing those
beautiful, leggy round Borders we all so admire.
Anyone who says otherwise...hasn't good show winning birds.
I am no different than any other border fancier. I want to produce round birds with the long legs and nice position. If I were to produce this nice bird, would you think I would have any second thoughts on whether to try and get as many chicks out of it as I can? I doubt that any fancier who have produced one of these birds would be holding back from breeding the bird because of the possible problems that you have mentioned. I guess that is why we are all to blame for helping to create this strain of birds that are so difficult to breed.
Hi Leng, My favourite of
