I've just purchased a pair of Border Fancy Canaries. I need to know if they're sensitive to cold weather. I breed only Vasser Shlager canaries in my Birdshed and they are sensitive to temperture below 10 degrees centergrades and wind. I've purchased this pair just because of a hunch - they look so cute! I have never raised birds in a shed but friends who do have heaters in their shed.  My birdroom is in my basement where the temperature is always above 18°C so I don't know how low of a temperature borders can withstand without being stressed.  Can someone help Pini with some advice?

Hi Pini If the birds are

Hi Pini If the birds are local(from the same area then there should be no problem. If the come from another area or country then find out about the min. and max. conditions. If they have come from the Northern hemisphere then you can just get them acclimatized to your bird room.Best of luck Donald

If you put your birds in the birdshed in summer, so they can feel from summer till winter temperatures going down, there should be no problem, even when temperatures go down till -10°C. Two things needed, no drafts and dry floor.

Canaries can withstand cold

Canaries can withstand cold temperatures above 5 degrees as long as they have food & water . Dark birds (Greens ) do better than light colored birds , it also depends on the temp. they where kept before you got them . If they came from 20 Degrees to 10 degrees or lower they are going to go into a molt . I would put heat 10-12 degrees to not have dempness birds don't do well in demp sheds .
